Canada will respond if Donald Trump, who won the US presidential election, decides to impose tariffs of 25% on Canadian goods, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.
⠀
Earlier, Trump in an interview with NBC News said that Canada and Mexico could become new US states.
⠀
“(Canada) will respond to unfair tariffs in several ways, and we are still looking for the right ways to respond,” Trudeau said at an event at the Halifax Chamber of Commerce.
⠀
The Canadian Prime Minister emphasized that the backlash to the decision to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum ultimately led to their cancellation.
⠀
Earlier, Trump said that after taking office as president, he would impose tariffs of 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico due to the unresolved problem of illegal immigration and drug trafficking in the United States, and also promised to add 10% to export duties on goods from China. The Wall Street Journal noted that the new tariffs threaten to undermine the global trading system and cause serious damage to key sectors of the American economy, including the auto industry, opening up new opportunities for China in international markets.

Under the terms of the T-MEC, or USMCA, as the North American Free Trade Agreement is known, many goods between the three countries are traded duty-free, subject to rules of origin and other standards. In this sense, the proposal by the US President-elect is a violation of the terms of the treaty, which could complicate economic and political relations between the states of the region.
