During the last couple of weeks, following the Paris attacks, the offensive against the Islamic State, being carried out by some countries has increased.
However, simply carrying out more airstrikes is not the answer, considering the fact that with each air strike, innocent civilians are killed as well. In fact, recent reports indicate that at least 18 civilians have been killed on Sunday, following airstrikes carried out by Russian warplanes, in the rebel-held town of Ariha.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has declared that the town, which has been held by extremist groups since May, also has a large number of civilians inside. Due to this, the Britain-based human rights group has stated that the attacks have injured dozens of civilians, while also reportedly killing more than 18. Local activists operating in the region have stated that the number of dead is situated at 40, as the airstrikes have reportedly hit a market.
While the source of the information cannot be confirmed as legit, this raises a serious problem. Is the fight against the IS worth killing civilians as well? At this moment in time, nations forming the coalition against the Islamic State should go ahead and cooperate more, in order to ensure tha incidents like this do not happen in the near future.
