Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Friday registered a powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake. At least two people was killed by the natural disaster, GlobalMail reports.
The earthquake injured 20 people, killed two and damaged buildings, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said. The natural disaster caused panicking people in Sumatra island and neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake measured 6.2 magnitude and struck about 12 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.
Head of the NDMA confirmed that the death toll of the earthquake – at least two people were killed in West Pasaman district. Twenty others were injured as dozens of houses and buildings reportedly collapsed. In addition, the powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake has triggered a landslide in its epicentre.
The Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency said there was no danger of a tsunami but warned of possible aftershocks. Meantime, people in neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore also reportedly felt the tremors.
Friday’s earthquake caused multiple damages to houses and buildings, and the authorities are still collecting information about the full scale of damage in the affected areas.
