According to multiple reports, at least six security guards were injured, but the prime minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi was completely unharmed, AP reports on Sunday. The attack took place after protests in the Iraqi capital over the result of a general election last month turned violent.
Iraqi prime minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi’s residence in Baghdad was attacked early on Sunday by the drone laden with explosives. However, an attempted assassination, in terms of the security service, was resulted in injuries of several members of Mr Kadhimi’s personal protection guard.
Commenting on the attack, the US Department of State condemned the terroristic act and offered assistance with the investigation. The spokesman Ned Price stressed that the drone attack was directed ‘at the heart of the Iraqi state’.
“I am fine and among my people. Thank God. The rockets of treason will not shake one bit of the steadfastness and determination of the heroic security forces,” the Iraqi PM has tweeted in the immediate aftermath.
Results of the Oct 10 vote caused a stir in Iraq
On Sunday, the Western diplomats based nearby in the fortified Green Zone, which houses government buildings and foreign embassies, said they heard explosions and gunfire in the area. Meantime, none terroristic cell claimed responsibility for the attack on PM’s residence.
The groups leading protests and complaints about the result of the Oct 10 vote are heavily-armed Iran-backed militias which lost much of their parliamentary power in the election. They have alleged voting and vote-counting irregularities.
Security sources six members of PM’s personal protection force stationed outside his residence had been injured.
