The Swiss’ bid for a ninth Wimbledon title is over after Roger Federer was knocked out by Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals. Even without victory, Roger made headlines.
The unbelievable fight against Hurkacz wasn’t lucky for the tennis legend, he lost 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-0 to the 14th seeded Pole. For Roger, the match became the milestone, after which he said he “does not know” if he will play at Wimbledon again. In 2021, the Wimbledon semi-finals will be totally different, without Federer and Nadal.
Meantime, Mr Hurkacz reached his first Grand Slam semi-final. The next move is a match against the seventh seed Matteo Berrettini for a place in Sunday’s final. The Italian defeated Canada’s Fix Auger-Aliassime 6-3 5-7 7-5 6-3 to reach his first Wimbledon semi-final.
Commenting on the victory, Hurkacz said: “It’s super special for me.” In fact, he is the second Polish man to reach the semi-finals at a Grand Slam. “Playing here and the special things [Federer] has done here, it’s a dream come true,” the athlete added.
The 39-year-old Federer will never set another his record, he had been 337 days when he had been bidding to become the oldest man to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals in the Open era.
During the match, Roger made 31 unforced errors compared to Hurkacz’s 12 in defeat. After a defeat, the Swiss quickly packed up his belongings and traipsed off the court, his head hanging before a final wave to all corners of the applauding arena. Standing but so bitter ovation for the living legend.
