Canada has imposed new sanctions on Belarus in light of the latest elections.

Canada on Monday expanded sanctions against Belarus in light of the latest election to include 10 individuals, including Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko’s wife Galina, and 12 entities, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

“In response to the fraudulent elections in Belarus on January 26, Canada made further amendments to add ten individuals; of whom six are family members and close associates of individuals implicated in corruption and human rights abuses in Belarus; three are senior officials of designated entities ; and one is a senior official of a state security agency,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Among the 12 sanctioned organizations are the riot police and the KGB of Belarus, the Minsk Bearing Plant, the Belarusian Metallurgical Plant and the Machine Tool Plant. The measures were taken jointly with the UK, the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.


Since January 21, early voting in the presidential elections took place in Belarus; January 26 was the main voting day. The turnout in the presidential elections in Belarus was 85.7%. According to preliminary data from the Central Election Commission, current President Alexander Lukashenko is gaining 86.82% of the votes.
