An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred on the border of Kyrgyzstan and China, the Kyrgyz Institute of Seismology reported on Monday.

According to the institute, tremors with a magnitude of 5.3 occurred on Monday at 13.54, an hour and a half after an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 on the Kyrgyz-Kazakh border, which was felt in Bishkek and Almaty and alarmed residents of these large cities.


Seismologists revealed that the epicenter was located in China near the place where a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7 occurred on January 23. However, vibrations in the earth’s crust were also felt in Kyrgyzstan. In the Kyrgyz settlements of Bedel and Karakol closest to the epicenter, the intensity of the tremors ranged from 3 to 3.5 points.


According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kyrgyzstan, there was no destruction or casualties as a result of the earthquakes in the republic.
