WHO team arrives in Wuhan to investigate virus origins

The UN health body team has arrived in the Chinese city Wuhan where the novel pathogen originated in 2019. The World Health Organisation (WHO) was approved by the Chinese Cabinet after months of diplomatic talks, LBC has learned.

The WHO researchers, who only wore face masks, were greeted by Wuhan airport staff in full protective gear, complete with mask, goggles and full body suits.

On Thursday, the global team has started its activity in Wuhan where Covid-19 was first detected for the first time in December 2019. The officials aimed at conducting a politically sensitive investigation into the origins of the corona epidemic.

WHO staff’s arrival in Wuhan came amid uncertainty about whether China might try to prevent embarrassing discoveries and as the country experienced a new surge in COVID-19 cases and reported its first corona-related death in months.
