Swiss President Ueli Maurer Meets with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi

President of the Swiss Confederation Ueli Maurer and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Bern, China Embassy reported. The central topic of their discussion was developing the relations between the two countries.

Swiss President Ueli Maurer has greeted the Chinese State Councillor and expressed the admiration for the tremendous achievements China has made in its development. For Switzerland, China remains a stable and active force for world peace and prosperity.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi thanked the Swiss leader for full support of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) proposed by President Xi Jinping. The top officials agreed that the relations between Switzerland and China have developed smoothly and have the brightest perspectives.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is gaining popularity among the European countries. That business opportunity undoubtedly will serve as a bridge for cooperation between China and Europe, which will help improve the quality of China-Europe cooperation and bring significant opportunities to Switzerland and Europe, Mr Maurer stressed.

Switzerland’s President expressed the hope that communication with the Chinese side on international and regional issues and jointly practice multilateralism and free trade will strengthen.

Swiss-Chinese cooperation is strengthening

The Chinese side hopes to further consolidate political mutual trust with the Confederation. Both countries are ready to strengthen bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, finance, ecology and innovation.

The Chinese side is willing to work with the Swiss side to take the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year. On October 22, Wang Yi also co-chaired the second round of China-Switzerland Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue with Member of the Swiss Federal Council and Switzerland’s Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.

Wang Yi appreciated Switzerland’s unique role and influence as a neutral country. Being a host country of United Nations agencies, the Alpine nation is maintaining multilateralism, build an open world economy, and defend the basic norms governing international relations.
