Boris Johnson has no intention to apologize for his burka comments, despite all the party’s pressure, the former Foreign Secretary said he won’t change his position on full-face veil on the faces of people living in the United Kingdom, BBC reported.
Mr Johnson expressed his own view on burkas in a newspaper column on Monday, those his words caused a stir on social media and not only. The British prime minister Theresa May has backed calls for Mr Johnson to apologise, saying the remarks have “clearly caused offence”. However, the insiders close to Mr Johnson said he “won’t be apologising”, adding it was “ridiculous” to attack his views.
Boris Johnson in his message has described burkas as “weird” and added women wearing full-face veil looked like letter-boxes and bank robbers. The founder of the Conservative Muslim Forum said the remarks would harm community relations.
“I would go further and say that it is absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letter boxes,”
Johnson said.
In fact, a full-face veil, which meant to cover the face of women in the Middle East, look a bit weird in Europe. Denmark has banned such a wear fro using in the public places, police have already charged Muslim woman who wore burqa last week.
So far, Boris Johnson hasn’t directly responded to the accusation that it is his language which caused the offence. Instead, the statement that has come from a source close to him suggests Mr Johnson wants to turn this into a debate about whether or not women should wear the burka at all.
