Recep Tayyip Erdogan paid a landmark visit to Greece, his two-day sojourn is the first official trip a Turkish head to Greece over decades. The year 2017 can become a point of positive motion in the relations of two states.
Turkey and Greece are the neighbouring countries, they are both a rival and NATO allies, but the ties between two states have never been easy. Hostility between the two nations goes back to the subjugation of Greeks under Ottoman rule before a bloody war of independence saw the creation of the modern Greek state in 1821.
During the meeting with Alex Tsipras, Recep Tayyip Erdogan had also stressed said that Turkey, which currently holds the chairmanship of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, would immediately call a summit meeting of the pan-Islamic group. The recent decision of Donald Trump on Jerusalem caused a stir among the countries in the Middle East.
In addition to his retinue of 200 bodyguards, Greek police are also to deploy 2,800 officers to take part in a highest-level security operation to guard President Erdogan.
President Erdogan’s reaction to Trump’s recognizing Jerusalem
Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday lashed out at his US counterpart Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, saying it would put the region in a “ring of fire.”
“Taking this type of step puts the world, especially the region, in a ring of fire. Hey Trump, what do you want to do? What kind of approach is this? Political leaders do not stir things up, they seek to make peace,”
Erdogan said at Esenboga Airport in Ankara as he was about to depart for a visit to Greece. In fact, the Muslim world met with hostility and anger Trump’s decision on Jerusalem. Saudi Arabia’s ruler King Salman and his powerful son described it as an “unjustified and irresponsible,” while Iraqi the government urged Trump to retract his decision.
