Ukraine: Murder victim’s dad detonates grenades in courtroom killing himself and defendant

A tragic incident in Nikopol, Ukraine, ended with the death of three and injuries of nine people. On November, 30, the grieving father of a murder victim detonated two grenades in a courtroom killing himself and one defendant during his son’s trial, BBC reported.

On Thursday a man set off two hand grenades in a courtroom in the Ukrainian city of Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk region. Police said that the father of one of the victims died instantly while a spokesman confirmed the death of one of the defendants after he was rushed to a nearby hospital by paramedics.

A criminal case qualified under Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (premeditated murder) has been opened.

According to the police spokesperson Yaroslav Trakalo,

“A man pulled out two hand grenades and detonated them at 11:20 (09:20 GMT) during a murder case hearing.”

The man acted after it was announced that the hearing was being adjourned and the defendants were being handcuffed.

“The man died on the spot from the explosion. Three defendants, two convoy officers, a court officer and one civilian were injured. All victims were taken to the hospital,”

Nikopol police spokesman added.

An investigation is now underway, the tragic Nikopol incident caused the loud public resonance. The conflict in eastern Ukraine means weapons are readily available among the population, that is a direct threat to the law and order as well as health of the common citizens.
