While I appreciate the efforts of the President, Al Gore, and all of Hollywood to save Earth from its “fever,” I do have one question: What SHOULD the Earth’s temperature be?

Is there an expectation that the temperature of the earth be static year-to-year with no cycles of warming or cooling? If so, what is that temperature? One decade the earth is getting too cold, and the next it is getting too hot. How do we know what too hot or too cold is without knowing what that temperature is? For all I know, the magical .038% of C02 in the air (most not created by me driving a minivan) is helping Earth reach its correct temperature, one millennium at a time.

Florida was once twice the size it is today. It was also once completely covered in water and non-existent, cycles that happened long before the invention of “the carbon credit,” the most logical step ever taken to end the climate “crisis.” Who is to say that Florida is not meant to be underwater? Or, San Francisco for that matter? (And I’d probably vote to sacrifice the former to sink the latter).

The question of what the correct temp for Earth is will never be answered for the simple reason that it cannot be answered. What would be bizarre is a planet with static temperatures, a world that never saw long periods of cooling or warming. While I doubt anyone would even attempt to answer such a question (“I’m not sure what the temperature is suppose to be, but I know it’s not supposed to change!”) I do enjoy general predictions of doom, mainly because they never turn out very well for the doomsayers. If they predict big nasty hurricanes, I’d avoid buying stock in plywood companies. If they predict the hottest decade on record (oh say, the 2000’s), expect the opposite (El Nino’s Fault!). And if they hold a conference on global warming, there will always be a snow storm or record-breaking cold temperatures. I like to think it is Mother Earth laughing at them with a wink, saying “I control this show” (I always knew she was conservative).

But maybe someday someone will ask the question of what the Earth’s temp should be. After all, if the science is settled the answer should be easy.
