Noam Chomsky on Ron Paul Libertarians: Common ground can be explored

Just as Noam Chomsky explains in the video clip much of the left and the Ron Paul Libertarians have several issues on which they agree.

The most important of these common views is nonintervention foreign policy . If the Left that is represented by Chomsky and the Ron Paul Libertarians could set aside their broad ideological platforms in which their views on foreign policy reside, it would help to form a much larger and united peace movement in this country.

Until there is a mutual respect for the other side's broad ideological platform, which would allow the two to work side by side on issues where they agree, it will be difficult to gather a large enough coalition of anti-war citizens to have an impact in Washington.

Aside from being the most important issue the two camps agree upon, it is also perhaps the most important issue that faces our nation. If Washington would decide to bring home troops, not only from Iraq and Afghanistan but from around the world, it would go a long way in easing the financial crisis at home by trimming 100's of billions of dollars from the budget. Bringing troops home would also instantly improve our standing in the world.

  • Cool interview. As a hardcore Ron Paul supporter and left-libertarian (in the mutualist/individual anarchist sense) I definately agree that there is a lot of common ground to be found. A lot of people say that there is only one party in the US: the “Republicrat Party.” The truth is, there are two parties: the establishment and the anti-establishment. Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, and Cynthia Mckinney are examples of the anti-establishment party. The more you look into how the system operates, you realize it’s not a democracy (or a republic) and it’s not a free market. It’s state-capitalism in the imperial setting.

One thing I really really hope that we can all work towards is ending corporate welfare, and not just the overt subsidies. I’m talking about rooting out the very basic flaws in our legal system that give corporations such a large advantage. In the absence of corporate welfare, or intervention on behalf of the wealthy, ruling class generally, I think everyone can agree that fewer remedial efforts would be necessary or justified, and both sides of the divide could work towards that goal. End state-capitalism.

PaulM - as a right-libertarian in the minarchist to anarcho-capitalist sense, I think your comment is right-on! I’ve often felt that many of the programs we have in place now wouldn’t even be necessary if it weren’t for previous interventions. I hope people can begin to align themselves based on individual issues rather than platforms. There are some issues you and I will not be able to work together on, but I suspect there are plenty that we can… and people should begin to work together on those issues.
