Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) said Sunday that an executive order President Obama promises to sign to guarantee a ban on the use of federal funds for abortions, is enough to win his vote to pass the ObamaCare bill. The move angered activists on both sides of the abortion issue:
Abortion rights supporters chastised the president, saying he caved on his principles by agreeing to issue an executive order that strengthens limits on abortion. Abortion opponents, on the other hand, said Obama’s pending order does nothing to prohibit spending on abortion services as provided in the Senate bill.
Stupak, surrounded by a handful of pro-life Democrats, announced the deal Sunday afternoon:
The arrangement appeared to cement passage of the massive insurance overhaul as House lawmakers later approved the rules for debate in a 224-206 vote, moving the House one step closer to passage.
Stupak’s decision instantly energized a heretofore little known opponent the Congressman faces in his bid for reelection:
Watch the momentum on Stupak’s opponent’s facebook page. Dr. Dan Benishek is running against Stupak in Michigan. Check out the velocity of his growth since Stupak announced: Benishek for Congress
His membership is currently growing at a rate of about 20 new members every 30-60 seconds and incoming comments are fast and furious. People are begging him to set up his donation site so that they can start a money bomb.
By a curious coincidence, Stupak announced just Friday on his website that three airports in his northern Michigan district have received grants totaling $726,409 for airport maintenance and improvements from the Obama Administration.
